Inter-district Permits
We are no longer accepting Inter-District Permits for the 2009-2010 school year. If you would like to try to attend South Pasadena Unified Schools for the 2010-2011 school year, and you are not a resident of South Pasadena, here is the process:

1) Obtain a release from your school district of residence. Check with your individual school district - most begin issuing releases in the spring for attendance in the next school year. If your school district denies your request for release, you have the right to appeal their decision. Please contact your school district or check their website for their policy/procedure on pursuing an appeal. Once appeals are exhausted at your district level, you have the right to appeal to the Los Angeles County Board of Education. A copy of the LACOE appeal procedures is accessible at the bottom of this page.

2) Beginning Monday, May 3, 2010, bring your signed release to the SPUSD Office of Instruction, Room 4, along with your student's most recent report card, and a copy of their most recent standardized test results (for grades 3 and above - CST, or other if in private school). You will be asked to complete our Inter-District Permit application, for the 2010-2011 school year.

3) Your application will be date and time stamped. Based on our current enrollment numbers and projections for next year, we will give you our best estimate as to whether we may have room for your student. However, it is most likely that we will not be able to accept students until right before the start of school, when we have a more accurate count of each grade level. School will begin Monday, August 30th, for the 2010-2011 school year. We understand that this is not ideal for families who want to know if they will be able to attend SPUSD schools, but it is part of the process, and is unavoidable because we are such a small school district.

4) If you have a student attending SPUSD in the 2009-2010 school year on an inter-district permit, and you wish to continue your enrollment, you will need to renew your permit for the 2010-2011 school year, and each year after, for as long as your student attends SPUSD. The process is the same, but please start your paperwork in the spring, so that once the school year is over, and your student's grades/citizenship/attendance/discipline have been evaluated, your renewal permit will either be granted or denied in a timely fashion.

5) For LAUSD residents currently on permit at SPUSD, or for LAUSD residents considering applying for a permit to attend SPUSD for the 2009-2010 school year, please note: LAUSD has recently announced that they intend to severely limit the number of students released on permit for the 2010-2011 school year, citing the sole reasons for release as 1) finishing the final year of a school, i.e. 5th, 8th or 12th grade, or 2) for reasons of parent employment, i.e. if a parent's employment occurs in the city of South Pasadena. If you apply for a release from LAUSD and are denied, please see #1 above.

6)  Please read the Interdistrict Permit Policy document below - it goes into further detail about the different priority levels of permits, and lists our criteria for consideration of acceptance on the final page of the document. The dates mentioned in the document apply to the 2009-2010 school year only.  If you have further questions that are not addressed on this page, or after reading the attached Interdistrict Permit Policy, please contact the Office of Instruction at 626-441-5810 X1120.
